Planning a trip to Houston/Galveston Area/San Antonio?

Posted on January 25th, 2012 by admin in Galveston sightseeing

I’ll be heading to Houston on May 28-June7. What are good places to visit that are close (1-4 hr drive). Like beaches, camping, caves, shopping, sightseeing. I’ll be staying in Pasadena and will be there two weekends so I want to visit any nice places that will take more than an hour to get there on those weekends and anything closer during the weekday. Any suggestions? Any good websites?
I’ll be traveling with mom, cousin & wife with two kids (8 & 4). I was thinking of going to a really nice beach, not a crowded beach, any forests/parks with nice scenery for nature walks & have a cook out, zoos. I’m more interested in being outdoors. Shopping centers will be nice.

Ride the Metro rail while in houston the kiddos will get a kick out of that, there is shopping downtown as well. I love San Antonio’s zoo, it borders Brackenridge park which is a nice place to picnic. But SA is a 4 hour drive from Pasadena because you are on the other side of Houston (at least depending on traffic)

Is Galveston Island, TX a good Spring Break destination for college students looking to party?

Posted on January 22nd, 2012 by admin in Galveston island

My and my friends were thinking about going to Galveston for spring break this year, is it worth it?
are there known to be a lot of college students here like other destinations? Or should we just go to Padre?
thanks

Drive on down to South Padre, it is much better than Galveston.

why do a lot of women work at restaurant’s and other businesses in central Texas?

Posted on January 15th, 2012 by admin in Galveston restaurants

please do not say i am stereotyping and generalizing! i have lived in central Texas for 3 years
i notice men do blue collar jobs they drive a lot of trucks
in central Texas. do men feel that is is beneath them to work in restaurants in central Texas is it a
macho thing with men the majority of male jobs consists of driving trucks, wielding, farms, or whatever
they do in central Texas. i rarely see older men working in restaurants as chefs or cooks. not at all
Restaurants just a lot of them. in Galveston the majority of Restaurants hire men as cooks and
chefs i lived in Galveston for 10 years this is what i have seen i am very observant of my surroundings! please don’t say i am stereotyping and saying all i am only asking about what i have
witnessed i completed culinary arts course and work as a chef this is why i notice this. am i correct
in my observation?

What foolish things did the people of Galveston TX do during the hurricane of 1900 that resulted in many death?

Posted on December 28th, 2011 by admin in Uncategorized

I have to answer this in a paper that’s due tomorrow and I don’t own the book it’s on: Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Warnings were inadequate; even weather forecasters did not realize until very late the gravity of the situation. Additionally, many people believed the barrier island was adequately protected against hurricanes. One of these people was Isaac Cline, the man Larsen’s book is about. Cline refused to believe the hurricane would seriously devastate the island, and so refused to call for evacuation. Cline was also consulted as to the benefit of building a seawall to protect the city, which Cline also deemed ridiculous and unnecessary. Thus, many people did not see a need to evacuate, and felt they would be safe to stay.

Even those who did try to evacuate had a hard time. Because Galveston is an island, ferries were needed to evacuate people to the mainland. Because so many waited so long, the gulf was too rough for ferry runners to successfully evacuate many of those who wanted to leave. Worse still, it became impossible even to get to the ferry docks. The best form of transportation available was trains, and when the storm began to hit, many tracks were quickly overrun with rainwater.

what was the safest place to be in all of europe for a catholic from spain in the 15th century?

Posted on December 24th, 2011 by admin in Galveston Cruise ships

im 33 and a medieval era / european history studier enthusiast fanatic…….im a white catholic from spain, i also have french ancestry to.

my favourite european historical figure is christipher columbus…….some of the things which is my area is english medieval history, medieval weaponry, english and european historical military figures and knights.

at around the 15th century….i made the choice to leave spain and live elsewhere in europe…possibly england….where would it be ok for me to venture without facing danger ?

because of my line of interests and the nature of the person iam…i consider i would of had a job similar to columbus back then and had been an ‘admiral’ or a sea voyager…..and carried a sword to.

Ireland, Wales or England

Posted on December 7th, 2011 by admin in Galveston Cruise ships

Is anybody going november 26th?

More importantly, any tips you have for a first time cruiser!?
13 years old:P

Not going on that one, Though i know how you feel.

Last summer, I was a first time cruiser too!

I made the mistake of not going to the teen room the first day, You need to do that!! There you can meet people and hang with them for the rest of your trip!!

you want to have as much fun as you can! if your any good at cards you can always find the card room (not the casino). Me n my cruise buddies practically lived there!

I don’t suggest running.. We got in trouble for that..

GET THE SODA PACKAGE!!!!!!

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!!!!! a first cruise only happens once ;)

Does anyone know of any cruise ships?

Posted on November 27th, 2011 by admin in Galveston Cruise ships

That are hiring? I’ve always been super interested in trying this out, and now I really want to. I’m from Houston, TX but I need to know if there are any hiring in Houston, or Galveston, TX. :) Or just anywhere in between them? Any names for cruise ships that are hiring? Has anyone ever been an employee on a ship? Is it fun? I love working with people, so.. IDK. Just need help starting. Ideas? Thanks a head of time!

Your best bet would be to go to the cruise line websites directly and look under the job section. You will need to contact them all to find out. Cruise lines don’t tend to advertise jobs you will need to do the work to find out.

why did i get hired at Shriner’s hospital in galveston in 15 min?

Posted on November 13th, 2011 by admin in Galveston restaurants

i walked in filled out a application talked to the supervisor showed her my culinary arts certification
as we were talking i knew i had the job. why won’t they hire me in bryan texas? is it because
i am certified and they have to pay me more is it because i am black! is it because they only hire
mexicans? is it because they feel women are only supposed to work in food service ! i don’t have
a felony criminal record! bryan texas is a prosperous town the unemployment rate is low.
why can’t i get a job in the food service industry in bryan texas i am very professional i wear a white
shirt and tie black dress shoes nicely groomed i know it’s not my appearance what seems to be
the problem with employers at these restaurants and food service department at school districts?

You got hired because at this moment Shriner’s needed you and you were their to fill the position.

WHY DO YOU BLACKS ALWAYS PULL THE RACE CARD? Don’t you realize you are wearing out your welcome with true white Christian people who don’t look at you as a Black person? But I for one am tired of this "whoa-is-me" attitude if you don’t get your way, it is because you are Black. Do you really think less of yourself for being Black? I don’t, but I sure as heck an tired of hearing it.
