“Galveston and the Gulf of Mexico

Days 93 and 94, November 2 and 3, 2010 What used to be Hwy 87 on the Gulf of Mexico before Hurricane Ike
167 miles to Galveston on Day 93; 43 miles today
Elevation, sea level

Today is a windy and overcast day and waves are slapping against the shoreline in what can only be a feeble mimic of what Hurricane Ike did to tear up this road. We had originally planned on going further up the road to Sabine Pass on the TX/LA border but learned along the way that 87 no longer goes there. It was confusing because our Rand McNally Atlas says that it does but the DeLorme says that it doesn’t. Someone should let McNally know!

We left Sam Houston National Forest and headed south to Galveston yesterday mostly because Mom recommended that we do so. She and Charles had vacationed in the area 17 years ago and she had fond memories that she wanted to relive and share with us. We took back roads almost all the way, stopping in Anahuac for a BBQ lunch of brisket, ham, and ribs. We got down to Hwy 87, took a right, and drove along the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico until we got to the ferry. The damage that Hurricane Ike did a few years back is very evident but there were also many new houses on stilts that have been built since that time. Jake and I wondered why anyone would choose to live in the path of a hurricane and live in a house on stilts. We got to the ferry that would take us across to Galveston and learned that we could not have a full gas can on the ferry, so we had to go back down the road, top off our truck’s gas with the gas in the can, and fill the gas can up with water. (A pain in the ass!) As we rode the short ferry ride, pelicans dive-bombing the water and dolphins cavorting in the waves entertained us.

Galveston was wiped off the face of the Earth back in the early 1900′s but you wouldn’t know it from the way it looks today. We drove along the seawall past a long row of restaurants, souvenir shops, hotels, and bars that were all pretty sleepy looking since this is off season and the weather was less than perfect. We did see some of Ike’s damage in town, too, but it seems that the sea wall did a pretty good job of protecting the town during this most recent hurricane. We drove down the island to Galveston Island State Park and settled into a soggy evening.

Today dawned stormy and windy…not a good day for sightseeing. We turned around and headed back north, not particularly impressed with our little side trip to Galveston. However, Jake and I agreed that the town would be a fun place to stay during nice weather when you could walk the town and partake of the fun that must happen there.

As we were heading to Sabine Pass, we pulled out onto the beach where Hwy 87 used to run to have lunch. Well, we figured out that we could camp here for free so we drove down the beach a ways and found “home”. It was only 12:30! It’s a rare thing to find our camping spot so early in the day. I made a lunch of grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches and tomato soup for everyone that was perfect in the stormy weather we are having. Jake and I went beach combing and discovered that we could pretty much eat off the beach. We found a dead bird, a dead fish, a yam, an onion, and a coconut. We didn’t pick up any of those, but we did find a great conch shell. After visiting with my mom for a bit, I headed in doors to read and warm up. It is very cozy in the camper when it is storming, even if it rocks and sways a bit in the strong winds. I was thinking about what I’d be doing at home in this familiar wet weather and figured I’d be cooking, so that’s what I did. I chopped a bunch of veggies, browned some beef chunks, and made a killer stew. The camper smelled divine and the windows steamed up from the heat of the simmering stew.

We invited Mom and Charles over for dinner and managed to all squeeze in to enjoy the evening meal. Dessert was America’s Funniest Videos that always makes my mom laugh.”

“After school, we tried to meet up with my friend Carla, who had been living in Houston for a few months. This was our first time in Houston since knowing this, and our last time before leaving Texas, but we were sad to find out that when I called, Carla was in the airport leaving for New Hampshire. Bummer! Maybe some other time…

Kelsey and I, then, went to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. Like last time, we played Texas Hold’em as we ate our wings. Kelsey was fantastic! I’d seen better days at the table. Oh well. We still wanted to get to our sightseeing adventure that day, and we let time get away from us. So it looked like we would just barely be making it to our destination on time.

We had planned to visit Battleship Texas, a memorial battleship that is retired in a harbor southeast of Houston. As we drove closer to the park, and closer to closing time, we soon realized that we would have to cross a ferry! I think it was a new experience for our van. Fortunately, it wasn’t a long trip, and we made to to the park with minutes to spare.

Although we made it to the park on time, we didn’t have a long time to leisurely peruse the battleship. It was a pretty brisk self-guided tour, but we took lots of pictures. I’ll leave you with those pictures to view at your leisure, as well as this little excerpt:

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s 1,200-acre San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site consists of the Battleground, Monument and Battleship Texas. These sites are located within minutes of downtown Houston and a short distance to the beaches of Galveston Island. Millions of visitors come to this area each year to enjoy the mild coastal climate and cultural and sports activities. Students and visitors alike are most fortunate to be able to experience history first hand through living history at the San Jacinto Battleground and Battleship Texas.”
