Hmmm...tough call. San Antonio is so huge, and offers so much, that you could be busy every single day of your vacation. In addition to Sea World, there is Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the San Antonio Zoo, the River Walk, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, a bunch of museums, the Missions...and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Lodging is likely to be more varied, with some less expensive options.

On the other hand, Galveston has Moody Gardens, as you already know, Schlitterbahn, several tours of historic places, ghost tours of their awesome cemeteries, the Strand, and (of course) the beach! While there are plenty of places to stay, overall they are going to be a bit pricier than San Antonio.

Use www.tripadvisor.com to guide your search for places to stay and things to do, and good luck on chosing between the two!
References :
So im thinking your aiming for something close to the San Antonio area id suggest Port Aransas Texas my family goes out there every summer its beautiful, alot of shops and AMAZING restaurants, there is also fishing, surfing etc. but i don't know if you have kids or the ages of them, if they are young then Sea World is a nice idea but it gets pretty crowded during summer so keep an eye on them. The beach in Port Aransas is a family of all ages idea, thing it has amazing condos at Island Retreat hotel, the condos there are like mini houses two-four bedroom condos complete with 2 bath a living room and kitchen and balcony facing the beach, depending on what floor you get, 3rd floor is a ocean view 2nd floor is a beach view sometimes you can see the ocean. They also have pools, its so relaxing at night when its lit up and heated its a beautiful view. The hotel is also a very short walking distance of the beach there is a board walk leading there. Prices range between 85$-150$ a night depending on the room you decide on i prefer Port Aransas over Galveston vacation wise. Ill leave the link to the Island Retreat Hotels website in the source box, and its a 2 hour drive from San Antonio, you will have to go on a ferry boat with your car and you can get out and watch the dolphins fallow the boat, i really enjoy the breeze, and also try the "Virginia's on The Bay" restaurant its to die for! and its literaly on the bay which means your surrounded by ocean, and there are shops and restaurants at every side of the road also a grocery store.
There's also the Missions but depending on your kids age(if you have any) it might be boring especially for teens, but little kids don't really seem to notice. But if you decide on San Antonio then the River walk is something you should defiantly not pass up, its the most beautiful and amazing sight at night and you can go on the boats while you take a tour at night its lit up beautifully and if you get hungry there are tons of restaurants, little shops and hotels along the river walk and also a HUGE mall all right next to each other and right next to the river, DO NOT pass it up, you cant go to San Antonio without looking at the river walk there is a reason why its our biggest attraction.
Also some great shopping places in San Antonio, the LaCantera is the most amazing shopping strip, ill put a link to their website, but the North Star mall is also great a cheap shopping place would be Alamo Ranch :) id put the directions but i don't think id have enough room.
References :
Island Retreat: http://www.portaransas-texas.com/island-retreat-i-ii.php

I live in San Antonio and go to school in Galveston. I have been to Moody Gardens, and its maybe a 2 day trip. I would go to San Antonio because there is so much more to do in San Antonio. Galveston is great, but unless you LOVE the beach, there really isn't loads of stuff to do, it's still fun, though. I just think that there is more to do in San Antonio, such as the Alamo, San Antonio Zoo/Botanical Gardens (both are GREAT!), Riverwalk, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, New Braunfels (which is about 45 minutes to an hour from downtown) also has a lot of fun things to do include visiting Gruene (pronounced Green), and floating the river (depending on when you go-would not recommend going on the weekends), Schlitterbahn (depending on when you go-again, would not recommend going on the weekend). And if you like shopping there are the Tanger Outlet Malls about 10-15 minutes from New Braunfels.
References :
Lived in San Antonio 14+ years.

Ride the Metro rail while in houston the kiddos will get a kick out of that, there is shopping downtown as well. I love San Antonio's zoo, it borders Brackenridge park which is a nice place to picnic. But SA is a 4 hour drive from Pasadena because you are on the other side of Houston (at least depending on traffic)
References :
Honey I live 13 miles from Galveston and the beaches there are looking good after Hurricane Ike. Also you should go to San Antonio and see the Alamo and all that historical town, Austin is so pretty. There is also San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas close to Pasadena. Texas is full of terrific people, welcome.
References :
What types of things do you like to do? Here's a site with a ton of information about Houston: http://wikitravel.org/en/Houston
By the way - Houston and San Antonio are about 4 hours apart. They are not in the same area.
In Houston try to see Space Center Houston, Moody Gardens, and the Galleria. Galveston has some lovely beaches and the old town area called The Strand has some interesting shops and restaurants.
