We’re cruising on 12/31/09 to Cozumel. It’ll be our first cruise (my wife and I, along with our 5 year-old son). My wife doesn’t know (it’ll be a surprise for our 9th Anniversary). I want to know what the weather is like during this time and what to expect from the New Year’s eve at sea in a ship. Maybe you haven’t traveled during this time but have traveled around the last 2 weeks of December and the first two weeks of January, which I assume the weather wouldn’t be too different. Any feedback is appreciated.
We sailed the Ecstasy last year about mid-December.
There were not even any Christmas decorations on board.
One heads up about sailing out of Galveston in December….Fog.
The ship will be delay docking and departing if there is fog. If there is fog, don’t park your car until you know the boarding process is underway. You will be stuck in the cruise terminal w/little comfort items like water, food or even chairs.
We were scheduled to depart at 4:00 pm. They did not dock the ship until about 8:00 pm at night and we were not able to board until midnight.
Take along light jackets. It is very windy on the decks in December.
It was nice in Mexico but a bit cool while you are sailing.
We recommend Lighthouse Parking instead of parking at the cruise terminal. It is more economical plus your party does not have to separate while the driver takes the car to the parking lot and returns via shuttle. Make an advance reservation at: http://lighthouseparking.org/ Make sure you make an advance reservation. They were turning people away on our last cruise.
Take plenty of $1, 5 and 10 in US dollars for shopping in the open air markets, taxis and tipping shore excursion personnel.

We have spent Christmas on board and it was celebrated very much the same as at any hotel on land. Christmas caroling, tree decorating, etc. Weather was very warm. It seemed odd to be spending part of Christmas in an outdoor swimming pool. Cozumel has great snorkeling, but it may not work out too well for your son. There is still a lot to see and do in cozumel.
