Galveston Island – What are the safest neighborhoods?

I'm looking to move to Galveston from Houston. What are the safest neighborhoods in which to look for an apartment? I have no kids (nor prospects of any) so schools aren't a consideration.
Okay smarty Cricket – "least dangerous neighborhoods" then.

Ok, now that we've all had a good laugh at how ghetto Galveston is, I'll provide you with a little clarity, because I actually live here, and I'm white believe it or not. People are so dumb. Anyway, there really aren't too many "neighborhoods" in Galveston. The previous poster who said that there can be run down houses right beside stately mansions is correct. That's how most of the city is. But, those are the areas you know are ok. It's the areas that are mostly run down houses that you have to worry about. Those are small and spread out over the whole island, so I can't really list them for you. You just have to drive around and see. The east end historic district is great. I absolutely love it. It's where all the old, nice houses are and it's close to UTMB. The lost bayou historic district is nice too. The west end is the where the newer homes are, and they have fewer run down houses there. But there aren't too many historic homes, and they tend to be more expensive. But that's where the white people who are afraid of Galveston live. For apartment renting, I would say find something on the east end near UTMB. It's relatively safe because of the large population of students, employees, and doctors who live nearby. It's close to downtown and the beach, so you'll have lots of options for entertainment. You can get a bike and use that to get everywhere you need to go except larger supermarkets. There are a ton of apartments available. I'd say stick to 6th street and west (meaning, avoid 1st-5th streets, as there are some shady apartment complexes there). Try to get an apartment in an old house instead of a complex. They have much more charm and are usually cheaper. Plus, you can usually get a nice one in a nice neighborhood, because large houses rent out their garages and carriage houses. I would suggest looking in the Galveston Daily News for listings.     The island is very interesting. There are no "safe" neighborhoods. Driving around you'll notice that there are beautiful houses and then all of a sudden some rundown shacks. You just have to go to the neighborhood to check it out.
