Concerned about Safety in Galveston. PLEASE HELP!?

Posted on March 20th, 2010 by admin in Galveston restaurants

Hi! I have an opportunity to spend the summer at UTMB-Galveston doing some undergraduate research work. While my initial research of Galveston looked like a beautiful place, as I dug a little deeper I saw alarming crime-rates. Does anyone who lives locally give me an honest opinion of the city, especially concerning the safety of a 21 year old female. I’m not planning on bringing a car, is this a mistake? How close is the campus to the beach and down-town area where the nightlife and restaurants are? Is the campus in a safe area? How big of a campus is UTMB?

Thanks so much for your help!

Galveston was never a particularly safe city and it got worse after Hurricane Ike. Frankly, there are very few safe cities in the United States. Galveston is probably as safe as Houston and New Orleans, but that’s not saying much. You need to know your area, take security precautions, and carry a defensive weapon. Travel in groups, don’t travel at night, lock your doors, blah, blah, blah . . .

If you really want to live in a safe city, then move to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, or any other major city in East Asia. They have virtually no violent crime, no privately owned guns, and no illegal drugs. America is pretty hopeless when it comes to crime.

While there are certainly parts of the city I would not advise a 21 year old woman to walk alone at night, the area around the hospital is perfectly safe. Campus police regularly patrols and there is a sizable area nearby that is predominantly student housing (where I’d suggest to live). That said I’d still recommend a car as it’s not the best city for buses or biking. Unlike BSherman I do not think a stun gun, mace, throwing stars, and a semi-automatic are needed to walk the streets of Galveston, or apparently most US cities
