I’ll be heading to Houston on May 28-June7. What are good places to visit that are close (1-4 hr drive). Like beaches, camping, caves, shopping, sightseeing. I’ll be staying in Pasadena and will be there two weekends so I want to visit any nice places that will take more than an hour to get there on those weekends and anything closer during the weekday. Any suggestions? Any good websites?
I’ll be traveling with mom, cousin & wife with two kids (8 & 4). I was thinking of going to a really nice beach, not a crowded beach, any forests/parks with nice scenery for nature walks & have a cook out, zoos. I’m more interested in being outdoors. Shopping centers will be nice.
Ride the Metro rail while in houston the kiddos will get a kick out of that, there is shopping downtown as well. I love San Antonio’s zoo, it borders Brackenridge park which is a nice place to picnic. But SA is a 4 hour drive from Pasadena because you are on the other side of Houston (at least depending on traffic)

What types of things do you like to do? Here’s a site with a ton of information about Houston: http://wikitravel.org/en/Houston
By the way – Houston and San Antonio are about 4 hours apart. They are not in the same area.
In Houston try to see Space Center Houston, Moody Gardens, and the Galleria. Galveston has some lovely beaches and the old town area called The Strand has some interesting shops and restaurants.

Honey I live 13 miles from Galveston and the beaches there are looking good after Hurricane Ike. Also you should go to San Antonio and see the Alamo and all that historical town, Austin is so pretty. There is also San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas close to Pasadena. Texas is full of terrific people, welcome.
