Fishing Boat Catches Fire, Sinks in Galveston Bay

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard responded to a boat fire in Galveston Bay, Texas, this morning.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a report at 8:24 a.m. from the Houston Ship Pilots Association that the fishing boat Captain Orlando was on fire two miles south of Eagle Point, near Red Fish Island, Texas.

Sector Houston-Galveston immediately dispatched a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Houston, and two rescue boat crews from Station Galveston.

Upon arriving, the rescue helicopter crew discovered that two crewmembers from the Captain Orlando had been picked up by a Good Samaritan boat in the area. Station Galveston rescue boat crews then verified that no one else was in the water, and set up a 200-yard safety zone around the burning boat.

The Captain Orlando had 100 gallons of diesel fuel onboard, and there is reported to be 600-yard sheen south of Red Fish Island in the Houston Ship Channel.
